Meet the Candidates

The Democrats

George Abdullah

Born: June 4, 2005 (age 61), Kandahar, Afghanistan
Current Position: Governor of California (since 2067)

George Abdullah was born in Afghanistan as the youngest of eight children.  His father, who worked for the US as a translator, was murdered by the Taliban terrorist group along with Abdullah's oldest brother in 2007; shortly thereafter, the rest of the family was permitted to come to the United States, and they settled in Michigan.

Abdullah says he decided to enter politics when he was 11, upon the election of Donald Trump.  Seeing Trump's anti-Muslim views as a threat to his family, he decided politics provided a means to do something about it.  Later attending Stanford Law School, he graduated magna cum laude in 2028.  He practiced law for several years before being elected to the state house.  He served as Speaker of the California House from 2061 to 2066, when he ran for governor.  A supporter of robot rights, an expanded minimum income, and the right of polyamorous persons to marry, he is distinctly a member of the party's left.

Abdullah would be the first immigrant and first Muslim president should he be elected.

DeShawn Andrews

Born: October 11, 1987 (age 79), Tupelo, Mississippi
Current Position: Senator from Mississippi (since 2037)

Andrews has been involved in Democratic politics since Barack Obama first ran for president in 2008, and was first elected to Congress in 2024.  A supporter of robot rights, Andrews is a conservative on the issue of group marriage, though he has said he would sign a civil union bill as president were Congress to pass it.  The author of the original Minimum Income Act, he supports raising it from its current $373,500 to $600,000, stating that it has not kept pace with the rate of GDP growth.

Mason Carpenter

Born: December 10, 2013 (age 53), Birmingham, Alabama
Former Position: Secretary of State (2057-2061)

Having been one of the youngest Secretaries of State in US history, President Ocasio-Cortez's former Secretary is running a campaign based on foreign policy: Carpenter supports expansion of the Democratic Alliance, direct global election of a DA president, and was one of the few Democrats to support intervention in the Second African War.

On issues of both robot rights and polyamory he is a self-described "extreme moderate," supporting a negotiated revision to the Gomez-Lausen Act and civil unions for polyamorous groups.

Stephen Dahl

Born: March 19, 2030 (age 37), Dublin, California
Current Position: None

Often described as "not a real candidate" by the media, internet personality Stephen Dahl nonetheless has met the DNC criteria for major candidate status.  His stated positions on major issues are distinctly left-wing.

Dahl has hosted several comedy shows on Netflix, and his comedy has long had a noticeable liberal slant.  He is no stranger to controversy, having compared President Barnes' actions towards robots as being akin to the actions of Nazi Germany and the Theocratic Republic of the Congo.

Reagan Fairchild

Born: April 17, 2019 (age 48), Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Current Position: Representative from Alabama's 3rd District (since 2057)

The Chair of the Artificial Intelligence Committee, Fairchild has launched numerous investigations into robot abuse, as well as the relationships between robot manufacturers and the Barnes administration.  Fairchild supports not just the repeal of the Gomez-Lausen Act but a constitutional amendment guaranteeing robotic rights.

Hunter Hancock

Born: August 14, 2016 (age 50)
Former Position: Host, The Hunter Hancock Show (2057-2067)

Perhaps an unlikely candidate for president, Hunter Hancock has never held political office, though as a young man he was a junior staffer in the administration of Amber Haglund.  From 2057 to 2067, he hosted a news and opinion program on CNNBC, leaving the show to run for president.  Known for his distinctly pro-robot views, Hancock promises to repeal the Gomez-Lausen Act and grant AIs full rights.  He supports civil unions for polyamorous groups.

Alice Hillman

Born: June 11, 2031 (age 35), Chewelah, Washington
Current Position: Mayor of Chewelah, Washington (since 2062)

The youngest candidate in the race, Mayor Hillman is known for passing a city ordinance requiring that all users of robots in her city treat them as employees and give them paychecks meeting a minimum wage of $200 an hour.  The case involving this ordinance, OmniTech v. Chewelah, is currently before the Supreme Court.

In addition to her fame in pro-robot circles, Hillman also supports continued government investment in fusion power (having invested in a plant for her city), and a 500% increase in funding for international global warming mitigation.

Franklin Hogan

Born: May 24, 1999 (age 67), New York, New York
Current Position: CEO, The Hogan Group (since 2036)

The only businessman in the race, Hogan supports a wholesale revision to the tax code, with the main goal of increasing the minimum income to $700,000, as well as massive investment in further global warming mitigation.  With a net worth of $1.7 trillion, he frequently notes that he would be taxed at 99% under his own plan.  An investor in robot manufacturing, he is the only Democratic candidate to wholly support the Gomez-Lausen Act, for which he has been endorsed by American Workers United.

J. Xavier Kennedy

Born: July 4, 2021 (age 45), Hyannis Port, Massachusetts
Current Position: Representative from Massachusetts' 7th District (since 2057)

The current scion of the storied Kennedy family, "JXK" is the Chair of the Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee in the House.  The focus of his campaign is raising the minimum income to $600,000, and providing employment protections for those workers in danger of losing their jobs to automation.  He is also a supporter of greater robot rights, and civil unions for polyamorous persons.  He supported the US intervention in the Second African War and supports an elected president of the Democratic Alliance.

Taylor Knotts

Born: July 19, 1989 (age 77), Paris, Texas
Current Position: Senator from Louisiana (since 2045)

Born into a family of staunch Republicans, Knotts entered Democratic politics after Donald Trump enacted his policy of family separation at the southern border.  In Congress, Knotts supported expanded immigration, and with Representative Noah Nelson (R-IL), she authored the 35th Amendment that allows immigrants to run for president.  As a candidate, she supports the repeal of the Gomez-Lausen Act and group marriage rights.

Shirley Ridge

Born: November 22, 2028 (age 38), Boise, Idaho
Current Position: Representative from Idaho's 1st District (since 2063)

A member of the House Oversight Committee, Ridge has positioned herself as a foe of President Barnes ever since she joined Congress.  A staunch supporter of robotic rights, she has accused the Barnes administration of being in the pocket of robot manufacturers.  Ridge is openly polyamorous, and her marriage to Thomas Renfrew and Barbara Cortez is recognized in the state of Potomac.

Jose Suarez

Born: July 5, 2022 (age 44), San Juan, Puerto Rico
Current Position: Representative from Puerto Rico's 2nd District (since 2061)

A member of the House Intelligence Committee, Suarez was one of the first Democrats to call for intervention in the Second African War.  His campaign is largely focused on foreign policy.  A noted conservative, in 2063 Suarez voted for the Gomez-Lausen Act, but now supports its repeal.  He opposes both full marriage rights and civil unions for the polyamorous.

Parker Underwood

Born: June 12, 2007 (age 59), Stamford, Connecticut
Current Position: Senator from Connecticut (since 2053)

A Democrat long involved in state politics in a red state, Underwood is considered the most centrist candidate in the race.  Underwood supports basic robotic rights, civil unions for the polyamorous, and a reduced military role for the United States in Africa.

Logan Wilcox

Born: January 22, 1992 (age 75), Florence, Alabama
Former Position: Governor of Georgia (2059-2067)

Wilcox is running a campaign centered around massive investment in climate change mitigation.

Philip Wong

Born: September 18, 1997 (age 69), Torrance, California
Former Position: Governor of Oregon (2055-2063)

A former client scientist, Wong stresses the importance of experimentation and moderation in government policy.

Harold Zhang

Born: June 30, 2012 (age 54), Singapore
Current Position: Representative from California's 64th District (since 2047)

The Chair of the House Armed Services Committee, Zhang is often described by the media as a "single-issue candidate," running on support of the expansion of the Democratic Alliance and a mandatory national service requirement (not necessarily military service).  A veteran, Zhang served during the First African War, where he was injured during fighting in Benin.  He has received both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

The Republicans

Lucas Vickers

Born: August 28, 2002 (age 64), Leeds, England
Current Position: Vice President of the United States (since 2065)

Like Abdullah and Zhang, Lucas Vickers would make history as the first president born outside the United States.  Vickers came to the US as a college student in 2022 and studied at Brown University, where he earned a degree in political science.  He worked on several Republican campaigns, traveling around the country, before becoming a citizen in 2035; in 2036, he ran for Congress for the first time (he lost).  In 2038, Vickers was elected to Congress from New York's 23rd district.  He was elected Senator in 2046, and held that seat until President Barnes chose him as his running mate when he ran for his own term in 2064.  Very conservative, Vickers opposes robotic rights, polyamory, and a raise in the minimum income.

Harper Henry

Born: October 1, 2019 (age 47), Orange, California
Current Position: Representative from Massachusetts' 9th District (since 2061)

A member of the Ways and Means Committee, Henry is nearly as conservative as Vickers, opposing robotic rights and a raise in the minimum income while supporting global warming mitigation and an expanded role of the US in the Democratic Alliance.  However, Henry, who is openly polyamorous, supports legalizing group marriage nationwide.  Her twenty-three year relationship with her two "husbands" is currently not recognized in her home state of Massachusetts.
